The Purge attacks the competition to finish first at weekend box office

The Purge is making waves at the box office this weekend. A larger than expected Friday showing put The Purge on place to make an estimated $36 million in ticket sales. This violent movie portraying an annual 12-hour crime spree has struck a nerve among moviegoers.

Movies like The Purge are not your typical genre that deliver the top weekend performances. The results are clear-cut, where Fast & Furious 6 is finally taking a backseat to another movie distributed by Universal Studios.

Last weekend's second place finisher Now You See Me is repeating its performance again this week. The magic/heist movie is taking large strides, already collecting $60+ million in its first 10 days in the box office. This is good news for upcoming heist movies that mix together with popular genres such as action, racing, and comedy to add a unique dimension to these clever projects.

Fast & Furious 6 will finish in third with nearly $20 million in ticket sales. The racing/heist movie broke the $200+ million domestic box office mark in just 3 weeks. Look for Fast & Furious 6 to finish its domestic box office totals far above previous predictions.
